Selecting a testing date
The exam is offered over a two-day window to allow programs to test all of their fellows and provide necessary clinic coverage.
- Fellows can be divided evenly amongst the 2 days, all fellows can take the exam on the same day or whatever works best for your program within the two dates.
- The exam start time is 9:00 am local time.
- ALL fellows taking the exam must start the exam at the same time.
- There is not a make-up date for the exam.
- The exam CANNOT be divided into two parts over the two day window.
Exam and Timing
- The Rheumatology ITE is a web-based examination
- Fellows take the exam at their home institutions in a secure environment
- The exam will consist of 200 items, some of which will feature images
- Fellows are allotted7 hours and 40 minutes; this includes breaks and orientation/tutorial
Registration
- Programs must register prior to January 9, 2012. If the program is not registered by the deadline fellows WILL NOT be allowed to take the exam.
- The exam fee is $185 per fellow. This fee can be paid by department credit card, check, or individually by fellows.
Exam Administration
Each program must designate a chief proctor(s) to oversee the administration of the exam. The chief proctor is responsible for:
- Performing workstation certification on each computer that will be used during the exam. This certification must be performed prior to the test day on each computer that will be used for web-based testing.
- Preparing examinee workstations – boot up each workstation
- Distributing instruction sheet which includes examinee login information
- Providing examinees with Examinee Startup Code for launching the exam
- Monitoring the testing session on-line
- Ending the exam session and complete a Test Administration Report
The NBME is working with a number of medicine subspecialties for in-service/training examinations, so it is likely that the tech requirements for the exam will already be known at your site. Oncology, infectious disease and nephrology will have exams in 2012. These experienced proctors are a great resource and may be just down the hall from you.
